Nice article. Wouldn't forcing Growler to dive also disable the Regulus navigation system? Greatest misguidance was USAF SLAM missile concept, a flying nuclear propulsion reactor that would radioactively fry anything near it as it could fly globally, while dropping nuclear bombs.
-
That depends - there were also two Fleet boats with missile guidance equipment that were deployed with the SSG's. They would operate cooperatively to guide the missile to the target.
-
Equally vulnerable targets, with no ability to hide in short-range Regulus nuclear attacks on heavily defended Soviet military bases of that time.
-
True. But sacrificing a guidance boat offered a chance at a 2nd shot from the SSG after she closed in. That's why they were there, to keep the SSG further clear (and harder to reach) of the defenses. And as they were Fleet Snorkels, I would say limited not no ability to hide.

Another incredible history was Snark. Epic guidance for a giant cruise missile designed to carry a multimegaton yield warhead. One 1950s test launch from E Florida ended up lost in Brazilian jungle for 30 years. Many Snark Florida crashes led to the line "Snark-infested waters."

"schnorkel" seems like a mix of the German and English words?
