Are anti-endnote people seriously paging back to notes section as they read like a scholarly monograph is Infinite Jest or something? Tbh, reading the actual text of the book and evaluating the sources seem like separate tasks. Combining them is distracting.
FWIW I actually read the notes most of the time. It gives me a LOT of insight into the nature of the claims being made, even on subjects I'm not deep into myself. I keep one finger in the back of the book (sometimes a separate bookmark). It's... unwieldy.
I had someone complain about the endnotes for my Fermi bio. They prefer footnotes, which is increasingly rare. I guess I prefer footnotes myself, but understand that commercial presses today strongly prefer the endnote format....
