Since unlike a "manel," I don't know who else is quoted in an article until it runs. I have tried recommend journalists talk to other people, with a bias towards recommending female experts, but it doesn't always pan out.

But I don't really feel that's adequate. Do I say, "please make sure you don't only talk to men, because it's kind of a problem in our field?" I could try that. I would also be interested in whether the sex of the journalist matters in the likelihood of writing "marticles."

Gender equity is something my bureau in NYC Health is handling now with frank, near weekly meetings. Gender ID, race, age, special needs: as much as we can. Bottom line: yes, you can export it by saying it’s a problem. Let them push back. What can they say?
