I am giving a talk at the Magnum Foundation tomorrow night, on nuclear photography. One little detail: the closest cameras to Trinity were Fastax (10,000 fps) cameras at 800 yards out. They were in a concrete bunker that used mirrors to avoid the camera getting disturbed.pic.twitter.com/kkH7iNz3sm
What's really clever though is that the whole apparatus is on a "sled" with a chain. So the tank that went in later to survey the contamination could just "grab" it and pull it to a safe area for recovery of the film.pic.twitter.com/V916DZAnSF
The final photos from these cameras, shown here, had frames spacing a tenth of a millisecond apart at times. (Edgerton's Rapatronic camera, which came later, was 10,000X more precise, as an aside!)pic.twitter.com/n5mfHxu43s
