And in the question of 2016 vs 365 — I'm averse to subscription models so I have not used 365 and am not planning to unless it becomes impossible not to. But definitely upgrade to 2016! Seriously. You will be much happier with it. 2008 is truly bad; 2016 is just "normal Word bad"
None that I've run into. By default it saves everything as .docx, but you can save it down to .doc if you want, too. (Also, you can probably keep both on your system if you want to. I still have a copy of Word 2011 on here.)

Also: remember that I'm still using a non-smart phone. I am not someone who would advise you to upgrade for the sake of upgrading. I wrote my whole dissertation in Word 2008, cursing the entire time. I waited FOREVER to upgrade. And then was very impressed despite myself.
