A friend told me their financial advisor told them that based on current projections it will take $1 million USD to send their baby to college. I don't think that's gonna happen... something's gotta give.https://twitter.com/AustenAllred/status/981723572665274373 …

I don't know what the case is for state schools like UCB, but for private schools students seldom have to pay the entire sticker price. The whole question of tuition and fees is crazy in more ways than one.
-
But even a percentage of a large number is still a large number. Especially if you tack on the other costs of living. (I say this with full knowledge of the irony that I teach at the most expensive school in New Jersey!) My students are STRESSED about money and debt. I get it.
-
Oh yeah, it's still bad. But I think those sticker prices drive away students who might be able to make the more realistic numbers.

The job market for PhDs sucks too. Being a visiting lecturer in anthro making $35k with $160k in student loan debt is, um, not great. And (yay capitalism) tenure track positions are like winning the lottery.

Looks like we had similar experiences and made relatively similar choices, albeit about twenty years apart. For what it’s worth, UCSC tuition was something like 5K in the early-to-mid 1980s. And I also worked for two years (at two different jobs) to defray costs. 1/2

BTW, what I planned to study and make my career when starting college (visual effects for movies) isn’t at all what I ended up doing even before I graduated. Carrying a large student loan debt would have greatly circumscribed my options and fundamentally changed my life. 2/2

My friends who attended Berkeley in the 70s paid $75 per quarter tuition. $75!!! You really could put yourself through college.

Here’s another bizarre twist, it’s cheaper to send someone to university in the US than to pay tuition to attend in the UK.
