How is the YouTube recommendation algorithm so... bad? Today it suggested that I might enjoy watching Fox News Live, AND that I should watch Peppa Pig. Aside from the fact that those are bad matches individually, how did it conclude that BOTH were simultaneously appropriate?

I keep reading about how scarily smart these algorithms are, but I've just not seen it. With all my browsing habits, etc., they ought to know me a BIT better, if their coders are earning their pay. (They've never offered me anything on nukes, or history! I mean, come on!)

Have my kids been using your computer? My recommendations are all House Science Committee hearings and mostly Peppa Pig.

Perhaps the algorithm is wise enough to assume that you ALREADY know all about nukes or history. Offers you topics about which you might need to know more.

I don’t get any wild recommendations - but the only channels I sub to are metal, how it’s made type things, more metal, buzzfeed India and binkovs battlegronds

You should try following the oral histories of the Computing Historical Society on Youtube. The first few videos follow somewhat randomly (i.e. all computing pioneers but in widely different fields) then… whack, conspiracy theories, Fox, extreme right. Pure non sequitur.

I like how YouTube punishes people who make videos on "questionable" content like historical firearms or general history by taking their ad revenue, yet half the ads I get on their platform are for quick draw concealed carry holsters.

I’m sure with your research you might get quite a lot of weird suggestions. Besides the questionable YouTube suggestions, any particular odd product suggestions stand out?

I don’t hide that I’m a liberal Texan Indian-American Hindu-raised atheist scientist married dad living in the Upper West Side. Facebook put ads for buying Hungarian-American pride shirts. Also, mohel training classes.

In my experience one can try to `train' the algorithm a little by repeatedly using the `not interested' button for excluding things one feels are wildly off the curve for one's interest. Results have improved for me in this way. Best wishes.
