Anyone think that the real reason was to hit targets in China and the Soviet Far East? -
I mean, that's what the huge buildups on Okinawa, Taiwan, Guam, etc., were explicitly for. And what the subs lurking in the Pacific were for. Etc. So it's part of the story. But most of the South Korean deployments were tactical and lacked the range to hit USSR/China.

Seoul to Vladivostok is less than 500 miles. About 700 if you avoid NKor entirely . Doable with Tac Aircraft of that era.
