And to just make that chart (from Stan Norris) very clear: by the mid-1960s, the US had deployed almost 1,000 nuclear weapons to South Korea. For perspective, let's just remember that is on the order of 100X the number of weapons the DPRK has right now.
It's 2/3 the total number of nuclear weapons the US and Russia each have deployed now.

Anyone think that the real reason was to hit targets in China and the Soviet Far East?
I mean, that's what the huge buildups on Okinawa, Taiwan, Guam, etc., were explicitly for. And what the subs lurking in the Pacific were for. Etc. So it's part of the story. But most of the South Korean deployments were tactical and lacked the range to hit USSR/China.
Seoul to Vladivostok is less than 500 miles. About 700 if you avoid NKor entirely . Doable with Tac Aircraft of that era.
