Finally bit the bullet and got my 1946 US Strategic Bombing Survey map of Nagasaki damage map framed properly. It's HUGE. I'm so happy with it. @RightAngleframe did an AMAZING job, especially in pressing out 70+ years worth of creases and folds.pic.twitter.com/ajKsNJrVW1

To give you an idea of how well they pressed it, this is a photo of another copy (less good shape) of the map that I also have. This one above wasn't as worn as that one, but you can see how 70+ years of being folded takes its toll...pic.twitter.com/f3NepKDb7I

The reason I love this map, aside from its vivid and stunning reminder of "the stakes," is that when you study it closely, you see they have actually labeled what was destroyed with surprising accuracy — the weapon went off in an area dense with schools.pic.twitter.com/mwbLGZWHFN

You don't know the half of it! My mother got the report it was enclosed in at a used comic book sale for $20! (She texted me, "should I get this for you?"... answer was "YES OMG")

It's interesting that most of the damage is mostly south of ground zero. Any idea why that is?

The worst damage is the stuff in red. The rest is focused by the mountains — Ground Zero was in a valley

Not that I know of. I have no idea how you would make a copy of something so large. I don't have the facilities to do it, anyway.

Can you post a photo of any identifying features, like publisher, artist, or printer? If it’s US Gov’t, there’s probably no copyright. Also, what’s the approximate size? Thanks!

I usually check the @ut_pcl Perry-Castañeda Map Library at UT Austin for digitized maps. They don’t have this. Perhaps they would know how to get it scanned?

Hi Matthew! There’s a large format scanner in our map room. There’s also information on the website if you search “maps.” Contact Kat Strickland, our maps librarian, for more assistance.
