Livermore report from 1963 on the feasibility of excavating of a canal through Israel's with 2 Mt nuclear devices, spaced at 4 per mile for 130 miles = 520 nukes = 1.04 Gt of explosives! "Another problem which has not been considered is that of political feasibility..." 😬pic.twitter.com/QECj5JCrEu

Unbelievable. What was the plan for the radioactivity?

"Don't bother taking it into consideration," apparently... I mean, I presume they would be trying to use very "clean" (mostly fusion) bombs. But even with, say, 1% fission, from that many bombs you'd still get a nasty amount of fission products (10 Mt or so).

My dad worked for a company in the Bay Area in the 60s on calculations that ended up being for some Plowshare Project related thing using nuclear bombs to dig a canal across North America. He had to get Q clearance to learn what the calculations he had been doing were for.

One would have thought that fracking natural gas formations with nuclear weapons would only produce radioactive gas...And yet Rio Blanco (three 33kT simultaneous) & Mandrel/Rulison (40kT) were detonated in Colorado. The gas was too radioactive to produce! Who knew?!

I like how when they bring up political feasibility they only mention that Arab states might not like the canal... it never asks whether Israel would be ok with nuking itself.
