never have I appreciated package managers until this moment... getting it all working on my Mac was like, not a big deal... porting it to Windows 10 has been a multi-day struggle.

(And before you ask, why would I do such a thing... I am trying to set up automated, Python-scripted OCRing of around ~1 million PDFs. So it's got to run on the office computer, which for various reasons is Windows... ugh)

@mendeley_com to do the job. OCR and bibliography -
It's about 1 TB of PDFs with their own custom metadata structure... from what I have read, Mendeley won't be able to handle that

It can manage standard (author, title, source) metadata, I don't think it can handle custom metadata. Also, I suspect that you like coding...
