Please academics. Pay attention to this. Asking graduate students to spend money they don't have for a less than 10% chance of getting a job is morally wrong. Use skype or phone. Anything else is inhumane.

Also, given that interview notifications often come long after one ought to be buying tickets, hotel, etc., you are either asking them to put a lot of money up front in hope, or plunk down way more money after they learn...

And it's not *merely* inhumane, it actively reinforces class biases that academia already struggles with. Some people have an extra $1000-$1500 to spend on this kind of thing. Most grad students (and many junior profs!) don't, and their departments don't/can't pay.
