Thankfully there is no actual #NuclearButton that @POTUS can just press. It's a process that requires the Secretary of Defense to execute the nuclear order. That's why we should all be praying for James Mattis to have good health, wisdom and rationality.

Unfortunately, I don’t believe that’s the case. The football follows POTUS. SecDef’s role appears to be non-essential. @wellerstein

Which is not to say that I think Kelly, McMaster, Mattis or anyone else close to Trump would question him, nor that Trump would be concerned about international law. But the generals are technically obliged to speak up under certain circumstances.

"Speaking up" is not refusal. Kelly, McMaster, and Mattis are not actually in the chain of command. "Legality" is a very low threshold:https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/posteverything/wp/2017/11/22/if-trump-wants-to-use-nuclear-weapons-whether-its-legal-wont-matter/?utm_term=.214236324304 …

" Legality" is a non existent theme in this regime ! Somewhat disturbing?

All this kiddie talk. A first strike is a war crime. MAD means just that. Obeying such an order will give every other nuclear power a fine excuse to launch or to assassinate the aggressors. No one else will object. There wont be time to try you if you are there in the room.

Doesn't really matter. Nuclear launch is not an order that can be given by the president, it just requires his approval.
