2/2 Amazingly, @wellerstein does the same for the very well-trodden ground of nuclear history. Maybe it's a stylistic preference, but I've always felt historical research is best served when it's filled with unanswered questions, factual and interpretive.
The thing about the projection of supreme confidence is that it is always a scam of some sort, whether the person projecting it knows it or not. I find things much more fun (and honest) when you can admit to the unknowns.
It also changes the role of the historian in an important way — when we acknowledge our own role in interpretation and presentation, it transforms us into much more creative scholars, beyond any mere chronology recorders. To be both creative and empirical is a fun practice.
