Garwin turned the Teller-Ulam paper into the Ivy Mike device, basically. Took a set of equations and abstract-ish ideas and made them into a real, 10.4 megaton physics/engineering proof-of-concept, and did it in a way that satisfied all critics that the principle ought to work.
