        This illustration is so naive, it breaks my heart. In an actual nuclear exchange, nothing in the bounds of this illustration would be recognizable. No buildings would be left, and in all likelihood, not even the shapes of the island and surrounding boroughs would remain.

        It should be kept in mind that it was an estimate for *1950*. Which means fission weapons in limited quantity. One can use my NUKEMAP, if one desires, to compare what a 1950-sized weapon would to do to NYC (e.g. 50 kt) versus a bomb from 5 years later (e.g. 5 Mt).pic.twitter.com/E1M47OQUOw

        Standard targeting assumption is that cities would be likely targeted with airbursts (it maximizes the blast damage at mid-range levels, encourages distant fires, etc.), for what it is worth...
