@wellerstein I know DPRK has been working on weapons through several administrations, but the tempo and level of provocation has increased with Trump. Why?
I think "provocation" is in the eye of the beholder (from DPRK perspective, US is pretty "provocative"), but I think they are at a crucial stage of wanting to signal capability.

They worry about the temptation of preemption (just like I do), want to make it look dangerous (I think it is). They act exactly how we'd expect a state in their position to act, most of the time — trying to demonstrate that doubts about their abilities are wrong.
