Military officers take oath of allegiance to both fundamental law (the Constitution) and presidential orders. Yet everybody must defend law above the whims of a president. All must conform to law, domestic & international treaty. VP & cabinet can legally declare president unfit.

Don't ever ignore in our time, that the president can whimsically order a nuclear first strike, especially considering retaliation costs of nuclear nations including China or Russia. A president could legally be declared unfit for office via the 25th Amendment.
