I would pose it less as negativity, and more as just an understanding of the current TT job situation (right now — 5 years will be different). If I were advising current grad students, it would be just this: "keep your options open." If you don't, you become very exploitable.

Oh they’re open lol - Judging from the large quantity of workshops that have been offered this semester, my department seems to be aware of the need to prepare students for alt-ac jobs as much as if not more than tt positions.
