Well, I made it back. I won't go into the details (other than things that were impossible suddenly became totally possible for the low low extra price of $100 CAN), but I'll just say that @AirCanada makes @united look like customer service gods. Adding them to my blacklist...

In Canada, if an airline indicates check-in closes at a particular time, it’s advisable to arrive *in advance* of said time.

-
The thing is, on nothing they sent me did they indicate any kind of checking close-in time (if they did, I'd have abided). Total surprise to me. (I fly quite a lot, generally without problem, so it takes something special to surprise me.)
-
(And, separately, the "you need to be here over an hour early" thing just happened to not matter after I paid them extra to rebook me for another flight that left in less than an hour.

Or getting their flight off on time.

Today was the first flight I ever took out of Pearson that left on time. (Alex, I'm sorry you missed yours, that stinks!)

Another thing... treating MP-5 armed RCMP at the CN tower like the Welsh Guard at Westminster. Saw two American teenagers try that in 2002. The RCMP were incredibly... "impolite" to them... and thier parents.
