Unrelated to news: I figured out how to rewrite my D3.js template so that it can use both GeoJSON and GMaps without serious modifications.

You can add location information to your Tweets, such as your city or precise location, from the web and via third-party applications. You always have the option to delete your Tweet location history. Learn more
But I've found with D3.js that 90% of the effort is getting things up and running. It makes that MUCH easier than doing it from scratch.
