You need a REALLY good reason to think deterrence won't work with them, if you are going to gamble on hundreds of thousands of lives.
North Korean leadership are terrible, we can all agree. But there is nothing they've done that makes me think they are irrationally suicidal

They are pursuing nukes for the same reasons US keeps them — assurance nobody is going to try to destroy them. We can live with that.

Even if they did, I am not sure that would be evidence of "emotional instability."

Just anticipating a test but firmly believe it shows a great deal about KJU. Similarly, his family killing is evidence of who he is.

Nobody is arguing he is a good person. The question is, is he suicidal? Is he unstable? Is he undeterrable?

And I think you need a GOOD, STRONG reason to think the answer is "yes" here. Because you are gambling with HIGH stakes.

"He's a dictator / he's a jerk / he talks big / he has rivals assassinated" — all of this is still less-than-Stalin, less-than-Mao behavior.

And both Stalin and Mao were deterrable and non-suicidal, in the end.
