Always nice when my history classes are topical, I guess. I am teaching on history of eugenics this semester. We covered "morons" last week.

Out here in Oklahoma they still operate those old schools and "farms" as mental institutions. Much diminished in occupancy though.

But yeah, there's even one in my town. In 1918, there was a massive fire there, killed dozens of patients. Buried in unmarked graves.

But yeah, people would abandon their children to these places and they would have them work on farms, make clothes, woodworking stuff.

The depressing thing for me is knowing how awful these places could be, but the architecture for them is often gorgeous.
