Note: traveling on Amtrak after traveling on a Shinkansen is...desperately depressing. Feels slow and rickety. And, of course, running late.

I have taken quite a few trains in the U.S. now - not one of them has departed on time. This Summer I took the train from London KX to 1/2
-
York and heard audible gasps from a group of American tourists when it made an on-the-minute departure 2/2.

I say this because the rail system in the UK is - as your doubtless know - not that good. And yet trains in the US manage to be far worse.

Only question that remains is: how do they define `on time'? If they means `less than half an hour delay', then you're `on time' right now.

It could be waaaay worse. I took Via Rail (Canadian) this summer after my last rail experience was the Shinkansen, and found out that 8 hour
-
delays on routes are a typical weekly occurence.

"On time" is "within 15 minutes" I believe, at least for NEC trains.

I know the big goal for the Cascades line has been to hit 80% on time service. :(

I hope your not traveling south of D.C. CSX owns those tracks & can force Amtrak aside at any time. I usually get to Williamsburg 1 hr late.
