Don't worry, you will be hearing a LOT from me on this in the very near term... just kicked off a major new research program with a workshop yesterday.

I have Dan's latest bk here, inscribed. We were close back in the day and between his reveals of history on the McNamara 'project' were occasional stories about his nuke work. Look forward to ur next chapters. Critical importance

But trump DOES get to hold it and light the fuse before handing it off to a real man to throw far enough away, doesn't he?

Isn't the SecDef's core mission to *maintain* an effective and ready military, at direction of the president's policies and decisions?

“the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff” = 'a staff', not a person? I interpret the directive as 'the Chairman'. Any formal DoD definition?

The instinct for documentation aside, relying on it is *precisely* the wrong approach to evaluate how a process will likely unfold in a crisis at the interface of bureaucracy and NCA. Especially when provenance or current relevant of even recent documentation is uncertain.pic.twitter.com/7ijTWYhsEp

And I'd wager getting straight answers as to where CJCS's understanding on two-man confirmation lies is like pulling teeth because: 1. seems like something folks would be hesitant to discuss, and 2. he just might not know yet. Still, you got to get it from the horse's mouth.

Interesting piece. I was in the 319th for tours as Deputy and Combat Crew Commander. If everything meets muster, format etc.. we would launch without hesitation. 9/11 brought this to the fore. Things happened that never happened before. Ever.

Alex, In the event of a hypothetical suprise attack on the United States, we have in place a designated line of succession for POTUS. However, in that scenario, with only minutes to assess the situation, how does the military know who the rightful successor is? And..

(2) And.. if the decision to launch is only a political one, and if the military assesses that we are indeed under attack, but can't get communication with POTUS or any successor, then what??

This is super cool, thanks Mr. Wellerstein. I’m writing a paper on this & the history of America’s nuclear stockpile at school and would love to interview you about the topic. I emailed you with more information, please let me know if you’d be interested
