Did they drop via radar despite orders for visual? Only other option was to ditch it in pacific cause they couldn't land with it.

Didn't the shape of the valley also have something to do with the low number of fatalities?

It worked to contain the explosion. It meant that the total area destroyed was less than Hiroshima, but fatality rate higher.
