@wellerstein If Roosevelt lived, Szilard might have met with him. Also not discussed: influence of Eleanor, Roosevelt's 'conscience.'
Always possible, but no way to know. The bomb took on a momentum all its own after awhile, as Szilard saw (in horror).

Well, it's not clear that actually would have produced a rapid surrender. There's enough uncertainty to go around.
