I've been trying to decode what FEMA thought the Soviet nuclear targets in Missouri were in 1990. Some progress.pic.twitter.com/WHqj9PljSa

@wellerstein Some of these identifications are tentative. But large power plants, airports, and military/DOE installations seem right.

@wellerstein A few potential industrial targets. I think the smaller size rings for the silos are indicating surface bursts.

@wellerstein Very hard to parse out St. Louis itself — many things clustered in there. Not sure if they are assuming pop. centers targeted.

@mattfarish We didn't have missile fields and the Soviets didn't have ICBMs (or even bombers that could deliver to continental USA).

@wellerstein Of course. But that didn't stop the NSRB/FCDA etc. from thinking about targets, both general and specific.

@wellerstein That's 158 surface bursts for the silos... a LOT of fallout would be created by that.

@wellerstein What's most interesting to me here is the apparent assumption that all airports, no matter how small, would be targeted.

@wellerstein Those with big enough runways could have served as backup dispersal airports for B-52s, B-1s, and their refueling tankers.

@AtomicAnalyst Yeah, I assumed something like that. It just feels like a wee bit of overkill to aim for the little ones. :-)

@wellerstein Well, we reportedly targeted pastures in the USSR that could have served as landing fields.
