@wellerstein A question regarding the LANL photos of Daghlian and Slotin accidents mockups: did they use actual Pu-239 cores to film them?

@wellerstein Or just precise copies made of non-fissile material? -
@pfc_joker I'm not sure. It could be a dangerous game to mockup an accident situation with the same materials! -
@wellerstein LA-13638 mentions a "reenactment" and a "rerun", the latter producing about 6×10^15 fissions. -
@wellerstein i.e. rerun did involve actual fissile materials. The question is whether "reenactment" (which refers to the photos) is... -
@wellerstein ...the same as the "rerun" or not. -
@wellerstein If it is the same, then I guess those are the only photos of actual weapon cores ever declassified? Or are there other? -
@pfc_joker The "cores" in those photos are the right measurements — and the only ones I've ever seen declassified.

@wellerstein Could you talk a bit more about the x-ray operator/mangled hands thing? Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

@wellerstein My wife had radiation therapy for breast cancer a few years ago, and I'm amazed how early it was discovered/used. -
@wellerstein Seems like an amazingly quick lab -> theory -> clinical progression.
