Saw Bridge of Spies. Enjoyable-enough film but a huge helping of Spielberg schmaltz. Wonder if someone could make a schmaltz-free edit.

@wellerstein IMO the best Cold War spy movie: Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (both versions). No schmaltz whatsoever. -
@Mad_Science_Guy My personal favorite is The Spy Who Came in From the Cold with Richard Burton. But we agree on Le Carré!

@Mad_Science_Guy I talk about it with my students all the time. I try to tell them what people in the 1980s and 1990s thought about it. -
@wellerstein I went to Eastern Bloc in the 80s, to me what's hard to articulate is the feeling.. like Vienna, Berlin as spy town, y'know?
