        @wellerstein It's only a 1 in 100 chance (maybe 1 against 99). Some acountant amended it, for sure ;-)

        @wellerstein because “we didn’t have a set of books showing costs, since the Army’s Manhattan District didn’t have or keep any.” 2/2

        @SchwartzCNS Maybe they just didn't share it with him—they kept very careful books. Groves wanted the finances spotless, in case they failed

        @SchwartzCNS I wouldn't characterize the records as lump sums. They have lots on individual contracts, division expenditures, etc.

        @wellerstein Thanks! Are the budget details in the official MED history you scanned/posted a while back or someplace else?

        @SchwartzCNS Yes, in the Manhattan District History. Both in the Financial volumes, but also broken down further in the individual volumes

        @ibeilin @brandontlocke ~$7,500 and $14,500 or so, depending on which fatality figures you go with and where you draw the line on costs.

        @gbrumfiel Depends how you do the deflator — I prefer production line labor, which puts it at $30bn — see http://blog.nuclearsecrecy.com/2013/05/17/the-price-of-the-manhattan-project/ … — but yeah
