I use a two-phone system. I have my "real" phone (non-smart) which is what I take calls and texts on. I have my "travel" phone (a refurbished iPhone) that I use for ride-share, maps, translations, etc. Nobody has my travel number, and it has a tiny amount of bandwidth (100MB/mo).
It's kind of silly to have two, but it allows me to use the benefits of the smart phones without too much risk of the distractions from it. I keep the travel phone purposefully hobbled. I'm holding out until some of the "smart but not distracting" options become more viable.

I do enjoy the protected wifi benefits of a fully loaded phone + unlimited data plan. I don't think I've used public wifi since I switched, and for that, I am glad.

I bought the refurbished phone (~$200) when we went to Mexico City, because everything I read said that Uber was basically the safest way for tourists to get around. Ended up finding it useful, and got a cheap bare-bones cell plane (US Mobile = $9/mo).
