WIPP is storing weapons waste. The type of waste being stored that resulted in the canister failure is a different type than SNF. It's not a fair comparison. And yes, MOX/PUREX reprocessing would require uranium spot prices of over $400 per kg in order to be economic.

But we also have a system that's heavily biased against nuclear energy in general. But it would take a miraculous reform of 60 years of unfair interference in Nuclear regulatory and US energy policy in order to save the sector, let alone make reprocessing viable.
