There are some things I wish they hadn't gotten wrong, but a lot of the story is dramatic invention in service of the core allegory - the price that (royal) we pay as a society for lying and letting ourselves be lied to because it is comfortable, politically convenient, etc.

I think the things they got wrong were part of a narrative creating a baddie - specifically, two-dimension Soviet leadership. Disappointing, as they had the space to tell an equally gripping but nuanced story. The writer's record before this is... not one of subtlety.
