Over-explaining himself was not Oppenheimer's style at all. Certainly not in 1965, when he was bitter, suffering from throat cancer, and tended towards the gnomic and enigmatic. The other interpretation is, "I felt like a destroying God" which is not Oppenheimer's style at all.

I don’t see why it wouldn’t and I think it’s rather dehumanizing, maybe a bit insulting, of O to say he wouldn’t. Didn’t he also say he wanted to tell every construction crew he saw afterwards “Why are you building? It’s no use!” (Or was that Feynman?)
