Killed some time at The Strand last week and found a few more atomic bomb diagrams to add to my little database. One on left is from Goodchild's "Destroyed of Worlds," and I remember seeing it as an undergrad but haven't thought of it it since.pic.twitter.com/Z8PJbasFvO
Middle one is interesting because it's the fourth derivative variation I've seen of this 1955 LIFE magazine H-bomb diagram. Interestingly it adds two more "fission elements." This diagram, despite it's goofiness, had remarkable influence.pic.twitter.com/VUwWBEYfkh
The last one is mostly interesting to me because it's the second place I've seen a weird "shoot a neutron source into the center of the implosion bomb" idea. The other place is Macaulay's classic "The Way Things Work" (1988).pic.twitter.com/qZW6ts2RUj
It's not clear to me whether one of these influenced the other, or were influenced by a common predecessor. (The source I have for the one at the Strand has two copyright dates because it was updated, one before and one after Macaulay, so I'd need to check the earlier one.)
And Goodchild's "Shatterer of Worlds" (1981) implosion bomb is clearly derived from this photo, which was first published in James Kunetka's "City of Fire" (1978). It was probably released accidentally. It is a different geometry than the final Y-1561 design, as an aside.pic.twitter.com/YwrcoHzGGw

Isn't there an easier way to accelerate neutrons?
if you're asking, "do they shoot the neutron source into the center of the weapon" — no, they don't. In old bombs it was something that would release neutrons once crushed (and could just be kept inside); now they use external neutron sources.
