I'm experimenting with a new approach to having NUKEMAP select a good "starting city" based on your IP address. But I'm not sure it is very accurate, and don't have a great way to test it out. Can you visit this URL to test it? https://nuclearsecrecy.com/misc/test/

Technical caveats: it is not supposed to perfectly locate your city (it is fuzzing off the last number of your IP address, which is just your ISP's location anyway). The goal is to figure out the nearest "big city target" to you, not to figure your location out exactly.

"It works great" = "totally plausible big city result." "It can't find me" = "it says it can't find me at all, no big city result offered." "It finds me but is wrong" = "it thinks it finds me, but the answer it gives is VERY incorrect, and the big city result is not plausible."

NOTE: no logs are taken by this testing script. If you don't tell me a result on here I won't know it. If you don't believe me, feel free to abstain! :-) Thank you!

It works well but not great. It skipped the two major cities closest to me (20 minutes and 90 minutes away) and identified a significantly smaller city almost 3 hours away. Hope this helps!

It does, thanks! (It helps me see, "the geolocator is OK, but I should add more cities to the nearby cities list," which is a separate thing)

Cell selected Dallas 129 mi west, but Barksdale AFB with B-52 wing is 50 mi east in Shreveport La.

Yeah, it's just looking at cities, not other types of targets.

Works fine for me - I get Manchester which is the nearest really big city near me. But no nuke effects would hit where I am because of the distance.

Although if we were going back to the prime Cold War where I live would have been a prime target what with a munitions factory near by https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ROF_Chorley … 1/

"somewhere near Morwell" pretty weird. Pretty sure the open cuts weren't dug with plowshare nukes.

Close, but pointing to Hamilton, ON as opposed to Buffalo, NY as the nearest big city.

Although this may well be technically correct, as Hamilton seems to have over 500,000 people whereas Buffalo claims 256,304. So I guess it's working well, just not in my specific use case.

So in terms of fictional nukings, instead of Hackett’s ‘The Third World War’ it’s giving me ‘Threads’.
