I saw a photo the other day of a child being inoculated with a hypodermic, and she and her mother were smiling. The needle was a small part of the photo. Doesn't entirely do away with your concerns, but an improvement.

Definitely. I think the macro lens approach is absolutely the wrong approach, because it makes the needle seem huge. All of the needles I've had lately (the tetanus and TDap) were so tiny I didn't even really feel them — less than a pinch.

There was a lot of cross contamination with those ones. There are newer ones that have a disposable cartridge for each patient.
