Minor observation from teaching: when I ask my students (mostly engineers) how many of them like "art," only about half will raise their hands. But if I then add on that "music" is a form of art, I get 100% agreement. I imagine "film" probably would work for this, too.

How about this explanation: Today's "art" is lousy and fraudulent and doesn't deserve to be liked.
-
Except "art" includes lots of things that people think have high value, like music, film, etc. So you're making the same cognitive error as the students, by meaning a very specific thing by "art" (e.g., "high concept gallery art" or something like that).

Any thoughts on this development Alex? The source is unverified but the implications could be devastating.....pic.twitter.com/g1v4V1VLTB

The confusion is in the multiple uses of the word “art”. For people who have little exposure to “the Arts” then “Art” means “painting”. That would be most people not just young male engineers. This leads to another hypothesis: what if you phrase your question about “the Arts”?

Musician checking in! I think it's probably simpler. Your mostly-engineering students probably just haven't been exposed to a lot of serious writing/discussions/critical work on "art" as a whole, and are just thinking of the term colloquially (ie "visual art").
-
FWIW, as an "artist" I don't take this kind of language stuff too seriously. Even people who "don't like art" still do things like set photos they "like" as their phone background (etc).
