I had the idle thought, "was Oppenheimer really the first to use the analogy?" A quick search through Google Books and ProQuest doesn't turn up anything with that specific analogy before 1953 (Oppenheimer's article in Foreign Affairs).
But I did find this amusing bit of religious writing from the late 19th century that suggestions that if you put scorpions in a bottle, they'll eventually die (which makes sense, whether by suffocation or starvation). Which adds a wrinkle to the whole thing...pic.twitter.com/LSAeCvSLPN
