Great photos here. I appreciate that the article does not seek to simply ridicule Civil Defense, like most retrospectives do. CD failed in the US, without question — but the reasons are complex, and important. There are important lessons in that failure.https://www.nytimes.com/2019/01/23/nyregion/nuclear-anxiety-photos-new-york.html …

By the way, my favorite artifact of NYC anti-Civil Defense is Happy Traum's "Let me Die In My Footsteps," which features Bob Dylan on backing vocals. Traum is a friend of my colleague Ed Friedman, and was arrested for protesting mandatory CD exercises.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o5jph1KWl_Q …

Interesting. Wonder how much of CDs failure was its focus on Nuclear attack rather than general disaster. Or if it only was able to survive as long as it did because of that focus.

Yeah, Sov civil defense was great. E.g., I knew that I'd have to walk to the bus stop (7 min), take bus to metro (10 min) and then would be safe. Of course, provided buses were still running more or less on schedule.

the Soviet civil defense has never seriously intended to give civilians tools to protect themselves from nuclear attack, it is an organization demanding the sacrifice of all, on the ground, in the preservation only for the Russian with racial and ethnic orthodox background .
