I guess my other take is, if you take offense at having your writing errors fixed by someone who will NEVER TELL A SOUL that they found and fixed them, then you really need to consider a profession that doesn't involve writing, OR you need to step-up your self-editing game.

These tasks used to be done by professional copyeditors before a book or article went to press. I don't see it happening much any more.

US university presses still copyedit, in the narrow sense of the term. Authors are responsible for final proofing and have been for at least 20 years.
