This picture from Apple-2, Opearation Teapot (May 5, 1955) viscerally demonstrates, for me, how fucking bright nuclear weapons are. Folk are inside a tank and it is brilliantly lit up. Apple-2 was a 29kt nuclear explosive on a 500 foot tower. As part of Operation Cue various structures (housing & shelters) were tested for response to being nuked. SURPRISE! They did not generally do great. Brick house at 5psi overpressure & wooden frame house at 5psi:pic.twitter.com/QSVnsYI2dq

Operation Cue (29kt, 500ft tower) like 1953 Operation Doorstop confirmed: Mannequins have no natural defenses against nuclear weapons. also that relatively simple shelters can, in theory & under certain circumstances, substantially reduce immediate injury from nuclear attack.pic.twitter.com/AzJ7BN6nmr

As @wellerstein discusses, the US also NUKED BEER (and other foodstuffs & drinks) in Apple-2 as part of the Food Test Program (IIRC). As I like mid-century Americana the cans on the right always interest me. In the UK cans similar to those were used for products such as varnish and turpentine. Most beer came in bottles. I wonder if the reason was WW2 or something else.

Those are steel cans. I’m against atmospheric (or any) testing, but we may need to model aluminum.
