Hello, I'm a nuclear weapon in a movie. I'm either ridiculously small or ridiculously huge. I can be defused and disarmed with your bare hands. I rarely go off, but the tension is very exciting. Sometimes, I glow.

Your presence is also clearly marked by red and green wires, and for some reason they always fail to label which should be cut.

And whose explosion ALWAYS results in a pyrocumulus mushroom cloud regardless of the size of the blast. Because nuclear detonations invariably create them.

To be fair, the sum of all fears actually seemed to get it right. Although perhaps on the ridiculously small side.

If you mean the film, it was a fizzle. From the Hospital the flash wasn't even a second long and the shock front arrived perhaps a second later, showing how close it was. Yeah it wasn't half bad to me.

That scene was edited from it's original version to reduce how graphic the detonation was, in the wake of 9/11, as I recall.

Makes sense, but the duration of the flash tells the tale.

That’s a pretty consistent rough indicator of yield, right?

Yes. There is a book called “Nuclear War Survival Skills” by Cresson Kearny that came out in the late 70s early 80s that goes into it. I think less than 3 second flash is a yield of 20kt or less, 3-8 seconds is 20-120kt, and so on. Its been a while since reading any of it
