Either I or someone else asked: couldn't you just, like, fund academic work, and ask the academics what it all means? No, no, that's absurd. We need a computer program that can read the work, we can't actually just fund the work itself, or talk to people.
That it was an odd project seems kind of obvious. What was interesting to me is that it was strange on several very distinctly different levels — seemed like several misunderstandings were required to take place simultaneously to get such a thing funded. But what do I know.
