I taught parts of the OT in my freshman intro to the humanities class last year (Genesis+Exodus, for a class on "the end of the world"), and the number of "I went to Catholic School yet never really understood any of this" responses I got was kind of amazing to me.

(I didn't teach NT so I don't know whether that makes a difference or not. But most of them had a very superficial engagement with the narratives. They knew sanitized "Bible stories," not the Bible, and therein is a big difference of engagement with the text.)

I concluded after some thought that it was too gnomic and weird to be worth assigning to freshmen — there wouldn't be much gained from it.
