These are really different from History of Science questions. Among my favorites I can remember being asked was: "When exactly was the word 'gene' coined, and what is the significance of that?" I got it right, but only because by sheer luck I had read about it the night before.

On my M.S. comps, I had an inorganic synthesis question about a compound I had never heard of before. I took what I knew about other compounds, tossed together and smoothed the edges. I got it right.

"Sheer luck" is a bit misleading. You successfully increased your "Luck Surface Area" by reading the night before. ;-)

The luck was that I happened to read the relevant book (out of the 300 I was tested on) the night before. If I had read it 4 months before I probably would have forgotten that kind of detail (I have no inherent head for dates and arguably am worse than most at remember numbers).
