omg I finally found it. I e-mailed it to someone just last year, and Outlook had it in the sent mail (but somehow couldn't find it when I searched by it). weirdness: the filename is totally straightforward. yet I don't have the file anymore. that makes me... unnerved.

I keep all my pdfs on a Google Drive folder and then use the web interface to search. I have similar problems with Microsoft search

@Apple that Spotlight was ever useful for anything? You can't even call Spotlight a 'search' engine. It's more of a befuddled blank stare engine. -
