Oy, I see that Congress is going to have hearings on the radiation hormesis thesis, and the EPA is (contrary to most scientific and NAS opinion) recommending that low-levels of radiation be less regulated.https://apnews.com/6a573b6b020e453c90ecd5e84aa23f57?utm_medium=AP&utm_source=Twitter&utm_campaign=SocialFlow&__twitter_impression=true …

LNT costs $. It’s always about $. E.g., it argues for contamination clean up to a background rad level. This is NOT zero & geographically & seasonally variable. So what is it? In real world we routinely accept natural exposure to 300 mrem/y and to medical (also 300/capita/y).
-
Regs promulgate exposure limit of 5 rem/y whole body (higher for eye & extremities) but demand as low as reasonably achievable if at all possible. Risk for rad-induced cancer is low (atomic bomb survivor epidemiology)...& no inheritable mutations ever observed.
-
Threshold effects e.g., acute rad sickness occur at known levels w/ some individual variation. So, we profess LNT in the regs but regs & reality allow for low level exposures. Even cleanups can allow for low levels (see MARSSIM, partly an EPA product).
-
Not saying hormesis is real, but it gets conflated with “get rid of LNT.” Data does not exist to backup LNT because N has to be huge to see bio effects at low levels. Health Physics Society says no consistent effects seen below 100 mSv total exposure. So health physicists argue!

I don’t have a dog and I’m not that well informed. But some clarity: hormesis is a health benefit from low level exposure. Proponents use this to argue LNT is overly proscriptive. There is some data-often disputed-to back up hormesis.

http://hps.org/documents/risk_ps010-3.pdf … While not good to be associated with Trump's EPA in any way, this potential regulatory decision will do by far the least harm to the general public compared with their other's decisions.
