has any country ever successfully produced or fielded a non-Teller Ulam design thermonuclear device? @thedelphivision @wellerstein @nktpnd @armscontrolwonk

In general, two-stage designs are just much more efficient than anything else, and so even states that began by exploring single-stage thermonuclear weapons (e.g. USSR, UK) seem to switched totally once they figured it out.

The US did explore some single-stage thermonuclear weapons (e.g. later variants on the "Classical Super" idea) but to my knowledge never did anything like a full test and did not field them.

I’ve got one last question for you guys. I know
@nuclearanthro will have a field day with this. Are nuclear warheads and their delivery systems shielded from the effects of an EMP?
